Welcome

You should probably read the very first entry to grasp the point of this blog.

In a nutshell, I am an aging diabetic striving to accomplish one last grand physical endeavor before time limits my options.
My drive towards the ultra-marathon was tied to raising funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research, but it has been closed. I still encourage you to visit the JDRF web site and make a pledge --> http://www.jdrf.org/

Pushing the Pace

January 6th, 2011.   Have I shared how much I hate Thursday?  This is the day I have to do my sprints after the run.  My training guide inserted this regimen to reinforce good form and quick foot placement--- the routine consists of accelerating to full tilt for thirty seconds at the end of the usual run.  You get to repeat that exercise four times (with a minute of brisk walking between each burst) and hopefully it is yielding benefits for my running tactics.

The sprints may or may not be crafting my stride to perfection, but they are decidedly helping me appreciate time.  I never realized how brutally long thirty seconds could be before enduring this exercise each week.  Perhaps this is an excellent tonic for someone approaching fifty, helping me realize time isn’t ticking away as quickly as I feared...

There was double jeopardy today because Thursday also happens to be the day for my “tempo” runs. This latter regimen compels you to run “above your comfort level” for several periods.  Thus far I have endured a pair of tempo runs that consisted of three five minute intervals (with a minute of brisk walking in between each interval), but today featured two ten minute intervals.

Phew!  Running all out for two ten minute tracks had me pretty whipped, though you do get TWO minutes of brisk walking in between tracks for this new form of punishment.  The evil thought lingering in my brain was acknowledging the reward for surviving this ordeal would be the sprints…

Fortunately I was proactive and took adequate steps to salve the expected wounds.  I had signed back up with Massage Envy when I pulled a hamstring some time ago and after reviewing the training schedule, booked a massage for the evening after this training plight and enjoyed my capable massage therapist kneading the kinks away.  It was amusing how she noted I had a few more rough spots in the legs than before…a testament to her perception and the intensity of the training regimen.
